Pike o’ Stickle, Harrison Stickle and Pavey Ark are classic examples of the rugged scenery produced by volcanic eruptions about 460 million years ago. The Pikes held Lakeland’s first factory about 4,000 years ago when Neolithic man realised that a vein of rock, a fine grained tuff formed from volcanic dust, was ideal for making axe heads.

LANGDALE 22A - Fell Foot at the foot of Wrynose Pass
Fell Foot Farm, Castle Howe and The Ting Mound at the foot of Wrynose Pass, Little Langdale, the Lake District, Cumbria.
This small area holds a wealth of history because it is a crossroads .
The present farmhouse was once an inn dating back to the early 17th century, but there was probably an earlier property on the same site.
Wrynose is part of the old Roman road named the 10th iter which linked the Galava Fort at Ambleside with Mediobogdum on Hardknott Pass and Ravenglass. The crag, Castle Howe rising to the right of the road was the site of an Iron Age Hillfort. and immediately behind Fell Foot farm is the Ting Mound, a rare example of the site of a Viking parliament and meeting place.

The Ting Mound, a Viking moot at the foot of Wrynose Pass, Little Langdale, in the Lake District, Cumbria.
Moots were open-air meeting places used by courts and other bodies responsible for the administration of the countryside in Anglo-Saxon and medieval England. They were located at conspicuous sites close to popular trading routes.
The Ting Mound at Fell Foot is a terraced 50m x 40m earthen mound with rounded corners and is up to 3m high.

LANGDALE 24A - Castle Howe, Little Langdale
Castle Howe near Fell Foot Farm at the head of Little Langdale in the Lake District, Cumbria.
This craggy outcrop at the foot of Wrynose Pass is the site of an Iron Age Hillfort. It overlooks the Roman road from Ambleside to Ravenglass and The Ting Mound, a Viking / Medieval meeting place at Fell Foot. This close proximity to a medieval moot suggests this area has a long tradition as an assembly point and the hillfort may have been re-used or re-built in post-Roman times.

Hodge Close was operational from the 19th century to the early 1960s. The 100 metre open pit was flooded to a depth of 50 metres to prevent easy access into the lower chambers. The waters and walls now present a popular challenge for experienced divers and climbers.
