ARKHOLME 01A - Church of St. John the Baptist
The Church of St. John the Baptist, Arkholme, Lancashire.
There has been a church on this site since about 1450. Initially it was a simple retangular building but the bellcote, west door and vestry were added in 1788. It was further restored in 1899 by Austin and Pailey of Lancaster. The church stands on the site of an ancient bailey and the 11th century motte can be seen to the north east of the church. This motte and bailey castle was built overlooking the river Lune and would have protected a medieval ford.

ARKHOLME 05A - Chapel Hill and the Church of St. John the Baptist
Chapel Hill and the Church of St. John the Baptist, Arkholme, Lancashire.
Chapel Hill is a late 11th century earthwork motte and bailey castle. The fortress was built on high ground to defend a medieval ford across the River Lune below. The bailey can no longer be seen but probably supports the church.
