BURTON IN LONSDALE 02B - Burton in Lonsdale Castle
Burton in Lonsdale Castle, North Yorkshire.
A fine motte with two baileys, a large rectangular one to the west and a smaller semi crescent shaped one to the south-west. This view is from outside the western bailey, looking towards the motte. The castle probably never fulfilled a military role. Records from 1130 suggest that the garrison comprised a contract knight, 10 sergeants, a porter and a night watchman. It fell into disuse between 1322 and 1369.
NB: There is no public footpath to the castle. An unlocked gate off the A687 leads up some steps into the field. Although there were no signs that it was private property, there is no official right of way to it.
