Growing on a fallen beech twig on a mossy woodland floor. The tall black spike is the sexual state of candlesnuff fungus when it produces spores. The black surface is covered with tiny conical spots called 'flasks' which are embedded in the white interior flesh. The black spores are ejected by force through the tiny openings in these conical flasks.

FUNGI 50A - Taking a spore print
Taking a spore print to help identify a species of fungi. .Lay a piece of black card over a piece of white card and position a mushroom cap so that it straddles both pieces of card. Add a tiny drop of water to the top of the mushroom and cover with a glass. By the next day, the mushroom should have shed its spores onto the card and you will be able to check the colour to aid with identificaction.

KING ALFRED'S CAKES 01A - Daldinia concentrica
King Alfred's Cakes - Daldinia concentrica - cramp balls.
This fungus used to be known as cramp balls because it was believed that putting one in your pocket helped to relieve cramp. Initially reddish brown, this fungus will eventually turn black as it has started to do at the bottom on this photo. Then, the fungus will resemble the burnt cakes associated with King Alfred. King Alfred's Cakes can often be seen growing on dead ash trees.
