Pike o’ Stickle, Harrison Stickle and Pavey Ark are classic examples of the rugged scenery produced by volcanic eruptions about 460 million years ago. The Pikes held Lakeland’s first factory about 4,000 years ago when Neolithic man realised that a vein of rock, a fine grained tuff formed from volcanic dust, was ideal for making axe heads.

During autumn and winter, starlings gather at dusk and group together in their thousands to perform aerial acrobatics in the sky before dropping down to roost.
Tarn Sike is a Cumbria Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve and together with sunbiggin Tarn they form a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSS1).
