ICE 01A - Hair ice - frost beard
ICE 01A - Hair ice - frost beard
Hair ice or frost beard.
Seeing hair ice is a rare treat. It only forms in late autumn and early winter mornings when the air temperature is freezing and the ground temperature is not. As long as the ground is not frozen, water is continuously being drawn up the tree’s trunk. When this water reaches a part of the branch or trunk with no bark, it seeps out through the pores and freezes. More water follows, again freezing on contact with the air and pushing the first frozen slither of ice further away from the branch to create thin strings of ice that look just like hairs.
