Heron Corn Mill on the River Bela, Beetham, Cumbria.
The present building dates from 1750 but corn has been ground here since 1220. This photo shows the new turbine house. The mill closed in 1958, bringing to an end 900 years of commercial corn milling. The mill buildings are now used for educational and arts projects.

On the left of the photo is the 1740 Heron Corn Mill, and on the right, a paper milll, established in 1788 and currently operated by BillerudKorsnäs who produce medical equipment packaging and food packaging.

St Peters is the oldest church in the historic county of Westmorland. There has been a church on this site since the 7th century, and parts of the present church date from the 12th century. Additions and alterations were made during the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries, then a fire in 1601 resulted in a lot of rebuilding work. Further restoration was carried out in 1868 by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, who also added the tower.

The school was founded by James Gandy in 1838. The school provided a basic elementary education (with much scripture) for the children of working class families up to the age of 12.

The Hincaster Tunnel, Hincaster near Heversham in Cumbria.
The Hincaster Tunnel was built to take the Lancaster Canal close to Sedgwick Gunpowder Works, and was completed on Christmas Day 1817. The tunnel has no towpath, and laden barges would have been rope-hauled by horses taken over the hill, rather than 'legged' through the tunnel. The 346 metre long tunnel, lined with about four million bricks was built by engineer Thomas Fletcher. It was last used by commercial boats in 1944.

The shaft and base are 18th century, whereas the ball on the octagonal corniced top is probably 19th century.
Riots, due to the building of the railway in 1845, meant that the cross was taken down and mounted on top of a lock-up that was built on the same site. The lock up was removed in 1862, and the cross returned to ground level.

The herd of Japanese Menil fallow deer were introduced to Dallam Park in 1720.
Fallow deer are usually spotted with a black tail stripe and black edge to the rump area, whereas in menil these are brown.

This former road-bridge is now a foot-bridge. It was built in 1730 by mason, Robert Robinson and waller, Robert Bindloss. The road was closed in 1813 when a new Turnpike road was built.

This roadside shrine is dedicated to St Lioba, after whom the early Saxon church on the site of St Michael & All Angels was named..In the present church at Beetham is a window commemorating St Lioba, and her life is celebrated each year on September 28th. St Lioba was sent to Germany as a missionary leader of a group of nuns in AD748. The plaque says that this shrine was presented to Beetham Church in memory of Dr Donald Watson 1936-2011.

The Fairy Steps are in a narrow cleft in a limestone cliff on the old corpse road from Arnside to Beetham. On the north face of the crag an old metal ring is believed to have been used to help haul coffins up the steps when the dead from Arnside had to be carried to the consecrated ground in Beetham. .According to legend, if you can walk down the narrow steps without touching the sides, the fairies will grant you a wish!
