'Mallard', the Windermere ferry arriving at Ferry Nab, Bowness in the Lake District, Cumbria.
There has been a ferry across the lake since the 15th century. In the early days, overcrowded rowing boats were used and the passengers were expected to row! The present ferry, ‘Mallard’ was built in Wales in 1990. This diesel-powered craft takes ten minutes to drag itself across the lake on underwater cables.
