Cartmel Priory and war memorial in the village of Cartmel, South Cumbria.
Cartmel Priory Church of St. Mary and St. Michael was founded in 1189 for the Augustinian Canons. In 1410 the unique bell tower was added, set crossways to its base. The priory was partially destroyed by Henry V111 in 1537, but was saved thanks to an original clause that villagers would always be able to worship in part of the priory.
