A view of the Langdale Pikes from the spoil heaps of a slate quarry at Elterwater in the Lake District, Cumbria.
Pike o’ Stickle, Harrison Stickle and Pavey Ark are classic examples of the rugged scenery produced by volcanic eruptions about 460 million years ago. The Pikes held Lakeland’s first factory about 4,000 years ago when Neolithic man realised that a vein of rock, a fine grained tuff formed from volcanic dust, was ideal for making axe heads.
