Cromwell's Bridge, Great Mitton
Cromwell's Bridge spanning the River Hodder in the Ribble Valley district of Lancashire.
Built in 1562, this is a narrow three arched footbridge with no parapets.
Oliver Cromwell and his 8,000 strong parliamentary army are said to have crossed the bridge during his march from Skipton to intercept the Royalists at the Battle of Preston in 1648.
J R R Tolkien also visited this area frequently in the 1940s when his son was studying at Stonyhurst College. Brandywine Bridge in the Lord of the Rings is believed to have been based on this bridge.
