Norman Cornthwaite Nicholson OBE (1914 – 1987)
From the West Cumbrian town of Millom, Nicholson's poetry highlighted local concerns, was known for his straightforward language and use of common speech. He received the Queen's Medal for Poetry in 1977.
"In writing about Millom, I write about life and human society on a scale you can cope with. Local imagery, but global concerns." Nicholson quoted in 'Profile' by Neil Curry, Arts North 1987.
