Smardale Bridge was built in the 18th century on an ancient packhorse route, so popular that an inn was built here called the Scotch Ale House for drovers travelling south from Scotland to sell their produce. There is no evidence of the inn today, but had it possibly been on the rough ground on the far side of the track? An old sandstone quarry lies within the walled enclosure above the beck.
