Scarecrow Festival Pictures
Scarecrow festivals, linked to farming practices, take place in the UK between May and September.
Prior to the use of scarecrows, farmers employed young boys to chase birds, but the Great Plague of 1348 meant a shortage of boys. Farmers then started to construct their own lifelike scarecrows from wood and straw, and stood them in fields attached to poles.
