The Three Peaks from the Great Stone of Fourstones, Bentham
A view of the Three Peaks of the Yorkshire Dales from the Great Stone of Fourstones, Bentham on the edge of the Forest of Bowland. From left to right the peaks are Whernside, Ingleborough and Penyghent.
Locally called The Big Stone, this huge rock is an erratic boulder that was dropped on this moorland by a glacier during the last Ice Age. Legend suggests this huge stone was dropped by the devil when he flew over the moors to build Devil’s Bridge at Kirkby Lonsdale!
