Treefold North overlooking Ullswater in the Lake District National Park, Cumbria. Treefolds are part of the Long View Project, a celebration of trees in the landscape..A sapling has been planted inside each treefold. The folds are built from local stone (the 'bones' of the earth) by Andrew Mason and bear two lines from a poem written by Harriet Fraser and etched by Pip Hall. This Ullswater fold is made from stones washed off the fells during the 2015 Storm Desmond..The Ullswater treefold reads,.."roots deep, years weathered.taking the long view"..Other treefolds are on Little Asby Common and in Grizedale Forest: The complete poem that is carved into the three folds reads:.."in this circle of land’s bones .moments gather into wood..seeds, ideas, earth, light.elements entwine, a slow graft of time..roots deep, years weathered.taking the long view".

Greenside Mine, Glenridding, Lake District, Cumbria.
Greenside Mine was one of the largest lead mines in the country, producing over a million tons of lead and silver ore. Mining began in the 1690s by Dutch miners on the higher slopes where veins were exposed at the surface. This early ore was hand-washed and dressed, then carried by pack-horse over Sticks Pass to the smelters in Keswick! In 1822 the Greenside Mining Co. was formed and soon a smelt mill was built on site. A silvery refinery followed to extract silver from the ore and by 1829 the company was selling the silver to the Bank of England. The mine closed in 1962.
In 1959 the mine came under the control of the Atomic Weapons Research Est. In Operation Orpheus, two explosions were carried out to see if underground nuclear tests could be detected by seismic instruments. They couldn’t, and the findings led to the shelving of a proposed test ban treaty between the West and Soviet Union.
