Old Iron Toll Bridge, Halton
The Old Iron Toll Bridge, Halton, Lancashire.
The first bridge to cross the River Lune on this site was built in 1849 so that Halton villagers could access their railway station safely following the death of 8 workers when a ferry capsized. That first toll bridge was washed away in 1869 and another in 1913. The present bridge was then built using parts from the old Greyhound Bridge that was being demolished in Lancaster. The bridge ceased to be a toll bridge in the 1960s.
