This fine cliff top castle overlooking the North Sea was first built as a residence for bishops and archbishops in the early 13th century. Most of the ruins seen today date from the 16th century.

The harbour was built in the 13th century. At its peak it berthed up to 300 ships, but fell into disuse with the opening of the railway. The North Pier was rebuilt in 1656 with stone taken from the Cathedral.
