Ribblehead Viaduct
Ribblehead Viaduct, Chapel-le-Dale in the Yorkshire Dales.
From 1869 to 1876 more than seven thousand men helped to build this 116km line from Settle to Carlisle for the Midland Railway Co. This was the last major line to be built by traditional pick and shovel methods. Two thousand men, women and children were housed in squalid conditions at Ribblehead for the construction of this massive viaduct. Hundreds lost their lives as a result of either accidents or smallpox.
